Home of Mount Mitchell

Located atop the Black Mountains lies the highest peak east of the Mississippi, Mt. Mitchell at 6,684' above sea level. and boasting some of the best high country hiking available in the North Carolina mountains.

As you drive the back roads of Yancey County, you will find such quaint names as Bee Log, Hardscrabble, Pig Pen, Possum Trot and Rabbit Hop. That's where old mountain ways mingle with the new.

With a mountain climate, Yancey County has average temperatures of 22 to 47 degrees in the winter and 80 degrees in the summer. Average annual rainfall is 84 inches with an average snowfall of 104 inches.
